Everyone around here knows how fun and challenging it is to shoot musicians. It’s gives everyone in the studio a chance to push the envelope and go for something even more daring that you could with an acting or corporate headshot. Kevin can play with lighting and angles until his brain turns to mush. Trish can breakout her rainbow of makeup colours and help style some completely amazing outfits. It also allows Andrea and myself a chance to do some extreme retouching and digital post production. Jake generally wags his little pug tail a little harder on those days as well.
Last month, we photographed singer and actress Elisa King for the second time in the past year. The last time she was in the studio during the summer and we got some great shots of her for her acting portfolio. This time she came in with a plan. A concept that she had been thinking about for the cover and inside spread of her new CD cover. At first, we were unsure if the whole thing would be able to come together, as our first conversation came to the conclusion that this could potentially be a shoot more suited for a high-end L.A. set constructed from scratch and with no real budget to get in the way….and the shoot was tomorrow! But we knew we could get something that would work, so on we went.
After the shoot was over, we had some beautifully lit shots of Elisa and parts of her concept that included costume and some simple props…but really the work was only about half complete. What she really wanted was something that didn’t look like it had been shot in a studio, something with more of a fantasy feel, with glowing things and pixie dust floating through the air. Sure…I like to doodle here and there, but by no means am I a digital illustration artist and this sounded way out of my league. So once I had talked with Elisa enough to get a good grasp of her idea, I just started drawing stuff. After awhile, the series of shots started to come together into a story and I watched as our studio was taken over by Elisa’s elaborate fantasy:

So there we are! We ended up with something very different from what our studio usually produces, but more and more in the last year we’ve pushed beyond the norm and came out with some very strong images. I’m excited to have been a part of the process and to have Elisa happy with the final result! We really hope that more of our Actors and Musicians can come in with some cool concepts for us to try, but we’ll get you looking your best even if you don’t!
